As mentioned in the RAD Studio 12.3 announcement blog post, alongside the upgrade of Android tooling to support API level 35, we are releasing a brand new visual tool to help you manage the Android SDK installation.
The tool is called Android SDK Manager and it’s available in Delphi for customers with an active subscription in the GetIt Package manager.
Configuring the Tool
Once installed, you’ll find the program in a folder like the following, and you can configure RAD Studio IDE Tools menu adding a link to it:
The executable file is TheAndroidSDKManagerGUI.exe and as you start it might tell you that the default Android SDK installation isn’t found, asking you to locate the file.
If you have installed the SDK via the RAD Studio installer, you’ll find it in a folder like:
Using the Tool
At this point you can actually use the tool, which has the UI shown below. As you can see this tool is essentially a GUI skin over the Android platform “sdkmanager.bat” tool. What it does is to provide a UI that makes it much easier to select and download additional elements of the SDK. In addition, it can be used to save the current configuration to a file and apply it on another PC running the same tool .
Each of the nodes can be expanded to see the currently downloaded elements and select (and download) additional ones. By expanding the “Platforms” node you can see the list of targets enabled:
Now you can, for example, select a different SDK platform and download the required files for it. The tool will show a log on the right pane and a progress bar in the status bar at the bottom:
Conclusion
That’s a quick summary of what this Android SDK tool does, it helps download various assets (or remove them if not needed) in a nice, graphical tool.
It’s a small but nice addition to RAD Studio, for developers focused on Android development. If you are building Android applications with Delphi, please download it and let us know how you like it.
