As you might have already seen online, Embarcadero is working on a new major release of its flagship database engine, InterBase. Available as a classic RDBMS on Windows and Linux, but also as an embedded database for desktop and mobile, InterBase is very versatile, has an incredibly small memory footprint, and offers exceptional value at an affordable price.
This blog post is based on a pre-release version of the InterBase software. No feature is committed until the product’s GA release.
Focus on Security and Encryption
InterBase was a very early proponent of a feature that is fundamental today for data storage: encryption. Considering the various privacy laws and the overall security focus of the industry, there is hardly any developer who doesn’t need to encrypt data at rest and in transit – and InterBase has offered both models for a long time now.
In the coming version 15 release, we are taking a few steps forward in this direction.
First, we are making AES 256-bit encryption the only encryption model supported (thus removing alternative, weaker security options). When this level of encryption was first introduced in InterBase, it was a premium feature, while more recently it has been made part of the core license.
It is worth highlighting that InterBase not only offers the fairly unique ability to encrypt the entire database, but also specific tables or columns with sensitive data – although with modern CPUs, encryption has only a negligible impact on performance.
Second, we are moving password hashes to use the SHA-256 password digest, for more secure passwords storage and transmission. This is also fundamental to make sure access to the data remains limited to authorized users only.
Third, we plan to offer compliance with FIPS 140-3, a security compliance standard defined by the U.S. government NIST and required for some industries, including finance, healthcare, and government itself.
