Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #162

- What is the Delphi component that you can’t live without?
- The on demand replay for the "Extreme Cross-Platform .NET with Delphi Prism 2011" webinar is now available at http://forms.embarcadero.com/forms/AMUSCA1006DelphiPrism20116-2.
- I’ve always been a big Jeff Duntemann fan, because he’s a great writer, an interesting guy, and because he’s been a Pascal/Delphi fan from way back. (I was honored when he sent me an autographed copy of his excellent The Cunning Blood – a book I thoroughly enjoyed – back when the new Turbo products were released.) Anyway, Jeff has a new collection of short stories out called Cold Hands and Other Stories. You can get it on lulu.com – my favorite place to buy books.
- The US Geological Survey built it with Delphi.

Jeff D? I remember Coriolis Books, which he seemed to have a lot to do with. Still have a few Coriolis books on my bookshelf in my (physical) library. I should take a few pictures and post them to my FB page…
June 14th, 2010 at 2:56 pmHey Nick, just a warning for your readers: if you go to the amazon link and look up the author, you’ll see a picture of Jon Shemitz instead of Jeff Duntemann. It’s not your visual memory that’s faulty….

Hehe — yeah, I noticed that, too. I tried to get an email to Jeff. Hopefully that will get fixed.

Any chance to have a real offline (.mp4, wmv) replay for "Extreme Cross-Platform .NET with Delphi Prism 2011" ? A cross-platform webinar requiring LiveMeeting sounds like a joke
June 16th, 2010 at 1:32 amI must say, after years of experience, I have gone off components. They never quite do what you need, or they do it in a way that goes against the concept of your application. Since you can only find that out by actually using them, you get to a point where you either press ahead regardless (and end up with code full of workarounds) or rip it out and start again with another.
For long-term, serious projects, better to roll your own from the beginning. The time/productivity curve may be flatter initially, but it stays steady. With 3rd party components, it goes up fast but then flattens off.
