Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #19

05 Jan

  • Well, it’s a new year.  Cool. Lots of stuff will be happening this year around CodeGear.
  • One of the main things that is going to happen right off the bat in this new year is the release of our new Delphi/BDS roadmap.  It’s been a lot of work.  It will look different that what you’ve seen in the past.  It will be more responsive to what you all are asking for.  It should be made public later this month.   I’ve got it open in MS Word right now, and I’m working furiously to make sure it has everything in it.  It will have to go through a pretty thorough approval process first, but it’s my overwhelmingly main focus right now, so it shouldn’t be too long.
  • Just so we are clear, I’m the Delphi Product Manager.  I do Delphi, and generally, when I talk, that is what I am talking to. I focus on that one product, and don’t speak for other products like, say, JBuilder or Interbase. However, some of the other, more senior leadership in the company are obviously more concerned with the company as a whole.  So when they talk, they generally address company-wide issues. So, for instance, if a bigwig starts talking about us getting into dynamic languages like Ruby, PHP, etc., he or she is not talking necessarily about any one particular product.  We on the Delphi/BDS side of things are indeed looking at new languages and the like.  But so are the JBuilder guys.  They might do one thing on the Eclipse side, and we might do another on the Windows side.  And that is not so say that we will only be doing things for deployment to Windows.  For example, a product may have a Windows-based IDE, but it need not be limited to deploying the resulting application to Windows.  So, just remember — I pretty much speak for Delphi and I, by definition, can’t exclude anyone outside of Delphi.
  • Pursuant to that, to say that we are looking at other languages doesn’t mean that we are "concentrating" on that at the expense of Delphi or C++Builder.  If I say that I’m concentrated very strongly on Delphi doesn’t mean that CodeGear is spending all of its time on Delphi and nothing else.  If someone says we are looking at dynamic languages, it doesn’t mean that we are "concentrating" on that and nothing else.  I confess it gets a little frustrating when we say that we are looking at one thing and people pop up assuming that we are ignoring something else.  We are capable of working on more than one thing at a time, you know.  ;-)

    Thanks for the update Nick.

Judging from the talk in usenet, a lot of people are looking forward to seeing the updated roadmap and I am no exception.

    Keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the update.

One question. As the Delphi Product Manager, does the Delphi.NET and C# fall into your domain?

I know I’m in the vast minority but I do very little "classical" Delphi and mainly C# with some Delphi.NET using BDS2006.

Looking forward to CodeGear in 2007.

Wow! "capable of working on more than one thing at time": that explains those 50% supergirl rating you got in that personality test…

    Nick,

Your points are understood clearly. That is why communication with customers around the clock is important. Speaking of important, it is good to hear that CodeGear is coming out with an updated roadmap later this month. For us developers, this is a big deal, as it allows us to forecast our development plans. My ideal roadmap would be something like Google maps where I can zoom in on specific dates. By having milestones, CodeGear is commiting themselves to execution. When you are able to execute, you are able to deliver what you promise. Success is all about execution.

I agree the points are nice. I suppose I can understand some people being confused. Until I started using Delphi (about 2002) I thought all that Borland did was C++ . I also can’t imagine the patients Nick must have being pestered about Highlander and not being able to discuss it.

    Here’s to 2007!
