Five Things You Didn’t Know About Me
20 Dec
Okay, strictly speaking, you are supposed to get “tagged” to do this, but I hardly ever pass up a chance to talk about how fascinating a person I am, that I decided to jump in and follow this meme that Nick Bradbury jumped in on:
Five Things You Didn’t Know Abot Me:
- I have piloted an FA-18 through the sound barrier to 1.07M.
- I once launched my (now ample) body over a high jump bar that was 6′4“ (1.9304m) up in the air. (Not quite as high as Steve Trefethen, but pretty high).
- I have a BA in Classical Languages. That means I can read Latin and Ancient Greek. (I still try to keep my Greek up by reading the New Testament in Greek).
- I’ve never had a single drop of coffee pass across my lips. Stuff disgusts me.
- I once rode an elevator with the Vice-President of the United States.
So I tag Steve Trefethen, Allen Bauer, Mark Edington, Erik Sink, and Steve Teixeira. I’m counting on you guys.

Neat stuff! (You’d told me #4 :P) but hey, thats some pretty cool stuff to have done..
December 20th, 2006 at 12:22 pmI saw the title of this blog post and thought "What a great idea! Perhaps I should do that too?". Then I saw item no. 1 on your list and thought, "Bugger off! I could never top that :-(". I’m struggling to think of anything cooler than piloting a plane such as the Hornet through the sound barrier. Heck, I got a kick out of flying a Cessna!
Thanks for sharing, Nick. I always find it interesting to learn a little more about the people I’ve only ever met online. I’m waiting for the day that you can come down to NZ so we can expand on this a bit more over a few cold ones. You do drink beer, right (Bud doesn’t count ;-))?
December 20th, 2006 at 12:29 pm"have a BA in Classical Languages." Now we know why you like Delphi…
What about a Borcon in Greece, just below the Parnassus?
December 20th, 2006 at 2:02 pmI thought that it was only Navy Lawyers that could moonlight as pilots…..
December 20th, 2006 at 2:06 pmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAG
MedBob — As a former Naval Officer, I can tell you that JAG is /beyond/ ridiculous. They don’t even have a word for it.
Pytho — I have actually been to the Oracle in Delphi. I should have had that on the list.
Cleggy — yes, as a matter of fact, I /do/ drink beer.
December 20th, 2006 at 3:35 pmI’m gonna top your #1 with this:
I’m driving a car at least once a week with more than 200 km/h (125 mi/h)
December 20th, 2006 at 9:07 pmWell, Greek language could have been the second official US language but one more vote was needed. So, greetings from all Delphi developers here in Greece!
December 20th, 2006 at 11:28 pmJohnnix relax that’s just an urban legened -search before you speak or else do not speak.
December 20th, 2006 at 11:33 pm>> I have piloted an FA-18
I remember finding this out from an archive of your old blog and was so envious. I love jet planes. Living in Chicago is great too since the Air/Water show here is fantastic. And I am always watching the military shows on discovery. The latest one they have is called Dogfight and they recreate famous battles using 3D imaging. The show is awesome.
I have always said that if I ever win the lotto, the first thing I want to do is book one of those $10,000 jet flight rides.
December 21st, 2006 at 10:44 am#1 - Dang, sweet!
December 21st, 2006 at 12:02 pm#3 - Impressive. I’m a huge fan of ancient greek & roman stories (ie. Gates of fire by Steven Pressfield, The Ten Thousand by Michael Curtis Ford)
#4. How can it disgust you if you’ve never tried even a drop? /shrug
You forgot to mention that you were in the same elevator as the guy that "made" the Internet!
December 21st, 2006 at 12:42 pmActually, the VP I rode the elevator with was Walter Mondale. My Uncle filled out a term of a Senator from Arkansas that had passed away, and we were taking a tour of the Capitol with access to all the "insider" places.
The /smell/ of coffee makes me ill, so the mere thought of drinking it makes me ill.
