A popular question asked at the RADStudio XE2 World Tour events is "when will you support Android development?". While FireMonkey’s initial iOS support will be greatly extended in future updates and releases, we are also planning Android/FireMonkey support for C++ and Delphi in future releases. However there are several ways you can get started with or begin planning for Android development today within the RADStudio ecosystem.

1) RadPHP XE2 supports Android web (m.) and "native" app (app store) development and deployment today using component based visual development and standard web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, and PHP. RadPHP XE2 also gives you component based access to Android device hardware features such as GPS, Camera, and Accelerometers.

2) You can extend Prism XE2 with RemObjects upcoming Oxygene 5 for Java, currently in late beta and available for pre-order today. Use the same advanced Oxygene language for .NET and Java (including Android) within Visual Studio.

3) FireMonkey is planned to support Android in the future, so your Delphi XE2 or C++ XE2 development in FireMonkey today will largely be re-usable on the Android platform in the future. Be on the lookout for beta announcements in 1H 2012. FireMonkey’s iOS support and developer experience will also be continuously extended and updated.

RemObjects prepping VCL and .NET integration for FireMonkey

The folks over at RemObjects are hard at work on a new version of Hydra that will provide several very cool use cases for FireMonkey. Essentially Hydra provides integration between differing platforms/frameworks allowing you mix and leverage different technologies in the same application.

There are actually a variety of integrations, all of which are really interesting.

The first is enabling Firemonkey HD and 3D elements to be used in VCL forms. This should allow you to augment existing VCL Windows applications with rich Firemonkey HD/3D features.

Next they are enabling Firemonkey HD and 3D elements to be used in .NET Winforms.

And finally, they are enabling WPF elements to be used within Firemonkey forms.

according to RemObjects, other combinations will be supported as well including FireMonkey in a WPF app, and VCL or WinForms in a FireMonkey app.

DevExpress XE2 Plans

Some helpful XE2 info from our friends at DevExpress.

- DevExpress’s popular VCL suite will be updated for XE2 including 64bit Delphi! Works today, beta soon. And since it’s working now, Julian predicts they will pre-release the 64bit code before official release.

- They are evaluating the new VCL and FireMonkey LiveBindings approach for binding UI and graphic objects to data

- They are evaluating FireMonkey - would be exciting to see what they would do with QuantumGrid in Firemonkey’s GPU based graphics, effects, and animation.

- As XE2 support is added DevExpress will be dropping support for 2009 (and earlier). So will be a great time to upgrade to XE2.

Own a piece of history for Haiti - Anders Hejlsberg’s TP Dev Machine

This historic Compaq Portable was used by Anders Hejlsberg to develop Turbo Pascal 4 (the first version of Turbo Pascal with separately compiled units). The 640kb memory luggable PC/AT class computer has a new lithium battery and boots to a working DOS 3.1 from the 10MB hard drive (the disk volume was created October 26, 1987). The computer has a Hayes Modem and a 5.25 inch floppy drive that is operational. Danny Thorpe, another member of the early Turbo Pascal and Delphi R&D teams, had this piece of history in his private collection and has generously donated it to raise funds for the Haiti relief effort. The hard drive contains installed versions of Turbo Pascal 3, and 4. Davidi is installing as many as possible of Turbo Pascal 1.0, 2, 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0 etc. Also installed are Microstar v4 from the Turbo Editor Toolbox, Turbo Chess from Turbo Gameworks, Turbo Telecom (for the Hayes modem) written in Turbo Pascal, Turbo Assembler v1.0 and Turbo Debugger v1.5. The drive also has Sidekick v1.56A and Superkey v1.16A installed. Bid high, early, and often!

One lucky bidder will have the rare opportunity to own one of the famous Borland Letterman’s Jackets. These jackets are the highest quality expensive wool/leather custom "Lettermans" jackets. Only a handful were ever made and were distributed to Borland executives. Several of these along with the suede jackets were donated and auctioned off in the first round of the Haiti Relief auction and raised over $1000. Recently Doug Barre, former Borland COO, was kind enough to donate his Borland Letterman’s Jacket to the Haiti Relief auction. it’s a like new size large - so everyone has one more chance to own this rare jacket and donate to the Haiti Earthquake relief fund at the same time.
