Hallvard’s Delphi 2007 for Win32 Confessions
If you’re into Delphi and you don’t know Hallvard Vassbotn, you should. Hallvard’s a long time Delphi programmer, writer, book editor, hacker, and blogger. Anyhow Hallvard knows Delphi like few outside the walls of the Scotts Valley campus. Lately he’s written a few comprehensive, and fairly technically detailed, reviews on the areas of Delphi 2007 that interest him - particularly compiler, RTL, and VCL. Hallvard’s the kind of guy that likes to get under the hood and figure out how it works and describe it so mere mortals can understand. Really interesting to read… especially for the engineers here in Scotts Valley who built everything.
Delphi 2007 Beta Review Part I
- The new installer
- Delphi 2007 is a non-breaking version
- What’s new in the compiler?
- What’s new in the IDE
Delphi 2007 Beta Review Part II
- What more is new in the compiler?
- What’s new in the RTL?
Delphi 2007 Beta Review Part III
- What’s new in the VCL
- Other new features
- Conclusion
Hallvard’s conclusion:
- If you’re developing on or for Windows Vista, you’ll want to get Delphi 2007.
- If you’re already on BDS 2006 and plan to upgrade to BDS 2007, you should seriously consider buying Delphi 2007 with SA (Software Assurance) or subscription now - that will (by all likelihood) give you BDS 2007 later this year. The transition from Win32 development on BDS 2006 should be very smooth - just keep using the same components without recompiling them. No need to wait for new versions from 3rd parties.
- If you are a Delphi 5-7 developer that is stilling sitting on the fence, this is the time to jump and take this offer. The IDE is much more capable and productive and the performance and flicker-free operation is on par with or better than Delphi 7 now. You can see the list of improvements between Delphi 7 and BDS 20006 in Nick Hodges blog here - all of these goodies (on the native Win32 side) are also part of Delphi 2007, of course.
I highly recommend Delphi 2007 Win32 for all native Delphi developers!
We’re getting very close to the finish line, so if you want to avoid waiting for FedEx to deliver your Delphi 2007 DVD you can pre-order the new web install ESD option for Delphi 2007 for Win32.
This week’s reminder to myself each morning: Don’t forget to 1) Feed cat. 2) Eat. 3) Sleep.

There’s another little reason for the upgrade right there; DELPHI ON DVD, AT LAST!
Was I the only one annoyed at inserting a series of CDs into my drive to install Delphi?
Or does anyone remember the stack of floppies you could use to install Delphi 1.0? [grin]
