Good points. It’s certainly a noble goal to provide end-user (non-professional) tools to automate applications - but often those folks don’t realize their limits. More often than you’d expect, the cost-benefit of developed app will beat the home-brewed spreadsheet easily in productivity timed saved. I’ve got to hand it to CodeGear - after all these years, they are still the only ones out there making tools (RAD) that automate the development process for professionals.
February 2nd, 2008 at 2:55 pmAre you going to do a roll-out of delphi onto the desktops of all the power users in a company so they can build situational apps? Doubtful. I’d like to see the cost-benefit analysis that would put a good spin on that. The reason the mash-up environments are getting the attention is because they can be rolled out very easily and very cheaply. The roll-out cost is the key here, because we’re talking about applications that IT doesn’t have the time or resources to build.
February 4th, 2008 at 4:52 amFabulous to see Delphi in DDJ. It’s always irked me that they do so little on Delphi - I’ve subscribed and cancelled at least three times over the years. Great work! Thank you.
February 5th, 2008 at 4:17 amI was trying to make the point in the article that back in the 80’s this was common place where people were making application on the fly and it eventually they became IT’s problem. I see the exact same thing happening with the new Mashup environments… so instead of investing in new environments, use products that can mature, and has a real language under it, especially if the application becomes important or mission-critical and continues to grow. However, from a Situational Application point-of-view remember these applications are quick, little budget and very little requirements and may be put in the trash as soon as the need is gone.
